STEAM Activities for Jett Jamison and The Secret Storm (in progress)
SCIENCE
Ecosystem and Garden Studies (Inspired by Sister Gia's garden)
-Design a resilient garden
-Plan and build a prototype of a garden that incorporates sustainable practices
-Use engineering principles to design structures that protect plants from storms, bugs, or weeds
-Design and create an actual small garden plot or terrarium
Noise Pollution (Reflecting on Jett's sensitivity to noise)
-Research, then measure and analyze sound levels in different environments
-Create sound maps for Jett’s school, home, and neighborhood
-Design and test noise reduction solutions
Environmental Community Activism Project
-Create infographics about community issues, then distribute and discuss them with others
-Design a community garden or mural that represents one of these community issues
TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING
Book Preservation and Restoration Techniques
-Research basic book repair and conservation methods: develop a unique design for an indestructible book
-Robotics: Sketch a robot similar to Rodney’s that would help solve a problem in the story. Use recyclables to make a prototype
ART
Storytelling and Memory Mapping
-Create visual journals representing Jett or Sister G’s experiences
-Design artistic representations of their healing and personal growth
-Develop mixed-media art projects exploring themes of resilience
-Drama: Impersonate Mr. Ed, Jett, and Sister G as they meet each other again five years after the book ends
MATH
Data Collection and Analysis
-Track and graph a plant’s growth
-Calculate garden plot dimensions and plant spacing taking into consideration each plant’s unique needs
-Create a spreadsheet to remind garden caretakers when to carry out watering, pruning, and fertilizing. Note dates and the reactions of plants to this care. Make connections between patterns of thriving or declining health and the care the plants received
Community Survey and Data Visualization:
-Survey local attitudes towards censorship or mental health
-Analyze the data and create visual representations of your findings
-Make conclusions from the data and share them with others using an eye-catching format and an engaging presentation
